rounded

A couple of times now I've walked something in the region of 5.85 or 5.90 miles, according to my pedometer. I rounded both these down to 5.75, which seems uncommonly mean, really. After all, 5.90 in particular surely qualifies as 6 miles? But the way I figure it, I want to make sure when I set out to walk 20 miles, I know what 20 miles actually feels like - not 19.85 on a flat road. Also, I'm guessing my pedometer counts steps based on the 'average' stride I input at the beginning. Well, when I'm huffing and puffing up those steep hills my steps are considerably smaller than 'average' and if they are all counted as normal, then I'm not actually covering the full distance recorded by my pedometer. Make sense? It's also true that when I'm walking on a flat, level surface, my strides stretch out, but I'd rather under-estimate than over-estimate. So, I've decided to just round every distance I walk down to the nearest quarter mile. So for several of my 5.75s, you can read 'actually-closer-to-6'.

For every rule, there is an exception and today is it. My pedometer actually said 3.48, but it was such an unpleasant 3.48 that I made a gift to myself of the extra 0.02 of a mile. I deserved it.

Horrible weather on the walk today, but my old waterproof jacket was sufficient for the job, if a trifle heavy compared to my newer, outrageously expensive breathable, wicking, waterproof Berghaus jacket which can be rolled down into a bag the approximate size of a Coke can. Why don't I wear this wondrous example of modern outerwear engineering, you may ask? Because when it was about a week old and Keskiyo was about 16 weeks old he pulled it through the bars of his crate in the back of the car and chewed holes in it, including a half-inch chunk of the zipper. I still wear it, but its capacity for being waterproof is quite severely compromised. To say the least.

Distance - 3.5 miles
Time - 1.05
Dog(s) - Neka
Weather - moderate rain
Could I do another 5? - nope
