So did you see the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition? The winner is an astonishing 12-year-old trombone player, of all things! Notable enough that at 12, he is the youngest to ever have won this competition in its 30 year history. But how... unexpected... to see a young boy playing a brass instrument. And not even a cool one like, say, a saxophone, but an instrument that I might have once described as fuddyduddy. Or similar.
Mr J and I checked into the show from time to time and were bemused to find what we considered a rather odd selection of finalists. How often does a guitarist get to represent the entire string classification, for example? And the percussionist? Dead cool. Or whatever it is that hip young things say these days to denote a youth possessed of a generous helping of visual and sartorial style and personal panache. Not to mention looking a bit like a hip hop star, which is pretty funky style for a classical musician playing with a full orchestra.
But I do recommend that you try to find the winner, Peter Moore's, performance on YouTube over the next few days as I haven't been able to find it yet. For the next 6 days you can see it on BBCi Player, although apparently that only works in the UK. I wouldn't know about that - perhaps someone could try it from not-UK and let me know. It's also being aired on various BBC radio stations, so that should be available from the BBC website.
Anyway, Peter Moore was truly wonderful and must have a promising future. Who knew how much I liked trombone?
Distance - 2.5 miles
Time - 1 hr
Dog(s) - all

Could I do another 5? - probably
